Ikatobi from the Ikahito Ethinicy, Umijin Race

Description of Image
Personality

Like all soldiers in Japan, Ikatobi seems to be part of a kind of hive mind under the command of the Japanese emperor. Ikatobi was one of the first soldiers of the second generation, born much larger than his peers.

This great corpulence has earned him great victories in civil wars in Japan, being a born protector and being called “the Japanese Ink Wall” by civilians. Such admiration has meant that, despite being an impeccable soldier, he is arrogant towards his comrades and superiors.

He also has a deep hatred for species other than the Umijin, such as the Inujin, as they call the French humanoid dogs. Ikatobi thinks that the union of the human and animal worlds was the next peak of world evolution and fervently believes that the Umijin are the winning species in this genetic race.

During combat, he often shouts many chants to encourage his comrades and is often very empathetic, something that puts his comrades off because of his haughty behaviour behind the scenes.

Story

Despite its inclusion in the Paris Agreement, Japan had no hope of being able to reach the minimum expected. They had already tried to reduce their carbon footprint when they signed their own agreement, the Kyoto Protocol, but Korea almost surpassed them as an economic power. So Japan did research genetic engineering during the years of the Paris Agreement and, although they surprisingly reduced quite a lot, coming close to what they wanted, Japan’s interests were already in living in the sea.

By 2050, a big part of Tokyo and Osaka had disappeared, so the capital was shifted to Kyoto, which was endangered by the constant flooding of Lake Biwa. However, the genetic engineering of the Japanese was bearing fruit and a new race called Umijin (the people of the sea) was born. Through the union of marine animal and human cells, hybrids were developed that could exist on both surfaces.

These beings could only be created by birth, so there was a strong depopulation process during the 2030s and 2050s. However, many volunteered to fertilise this first generation of Umijin, with a second, more “perfected” generation born around 2050. They were more defined and possessed certain elements of the original species, with human knowledge and behaviour prevailing because of this filter between generations and their habitat surrounded by humans. The big disadvantage of this is that they have inherited the F.L. effect so that, although their aquatic behaviour gives them resistance, they are still affected if they get too wet.

The main ethnic groups of the Umijin were the Ikahito, Takohito and Tsunahito, coming from squid, octopus and tuna respectively. The second generation Umijin trained to be soldiers, thus returning to the imperialist Japan of the early 20th century.

The names given to these soldiers are their ethnicity + their code. In this case, the name is Ikatobi being an Ikahito and having the code 7031.

Skill

It shoots pressurised water in a straight line and causes the enemy to retreat X distance along with it. To coordinate the direction of the shot the player must focus the shot as it is uncontrolled.

Context

This character sheet was created during my university internship at Labotec Games, where I was in charge of the narrative design for a hero shooter game set in a world that had been flooded.
