1. INTRO

EXT. DARK BACKSTREET. DAY

KUD and STEIN are near a wooden box, at the end of a backstreet with no exit. Both wear suits, and KUD holds a bordeaux briefcase.

STEIN
This dummy is getting late. He needs to hurry, we got things to do.
KUD
And if we go now? There is no need to deliver all the orders today.
STEIN
We can't, he’s going to give us a lot of money, but I can tell you I would like to.

A few seconds later, a man walks into the backstreet. He wears a salesman suit and is smoking a cigarette. In his other hand, he presses a black briefcase against his chest.

STEIN (CONT’D)
        Finally.
KUD
Wait, we haven’t met him before.
        (Speaking to the unknown man)
        What do you want, Goodfellow?
TONORI
(He stops at a certain distance from KUD and STEIN)
I'm TONORI, and I had an exchange with you, guys.
KUD
        What was it about?
TONORI
        You know.

TONORI mimics injecting a syringe into his arm. After this, he starts walking closer to KUD and STEIN, throwing the cigarette stub onto the floor.

STEIN
        (To KUD)
It's him, let’s get this over with.
KUD
He could be talking about drugs. I’m sorry, good man, but we don’t sell drugs.
TONORI
What? I’m talking about the superpowers.

KUD looks annoyed but opens the briefcase to reveal six syringes filled with different colored liquids.

TONORI (CONT’D)
        (Laughs nervously)
        These are all superpowers, right?
STEIN
Yeah, let’s make this quick. Which one did you want?
KUD
Mr. TONORI, have you been warned that each power comes with a major side effect? It can even be deadly.
STEIN
Shut up, KUD. Do you want to ruin the sale?
TONORI
I don’t care. I want to be super strong. No one will tease me anymore. Those bastards...

TONORI laughs hysterically.

STEIN
Super strength, right? This red one. (He grabs the syringe.) Money first.

TONORI gives them the black briefcase and KUD and STEIN hand him the syringe. While counting the money, TONORI stares at the syringe, mesmerized.

TONORI
So, if I inject this, I’ll be the strongest man on Earth?
STEIN
(Counting money, not looking at him)
        Probably.
TONORI
And why do you do it?
STEIN
(Stops counting and shows TONORI the money)
        Because it’s worth it.
TONORI
        (While injecting himself)
If I’m going to be the strongest, why should I let you keep my money? In fact, all those powers are mine too.

TONORI screams loudly. He collapses on the floor for a moment before getting back up.

KUD
I think we should run, STEIN.

2. FIRST QUEST

OUT. DARK BACKSTREET. DAY

TONORI is on his knees, on the floor, scream because of the pain and with the syringe stucked in his arm. His muscles are growing at high speed, what makes all his body shake. KUD and STEIN start running out of the backstreet while TONORI is still on the floor. Now the player starts playing and he controls KUD.

KUD
I knew something like this would happen. The guy smokes, I don’t think he can catch us.

At the end of the backstreet, the player will see a bunch of cars on the road and he will have to avoid them with some QuickTime Events. When this sequence is over, the camera will turn and we will see a very muscular TONORI going out the backstreet and chasing KUD.

KUD will need to keep running through a crowded sidewalk, using the joystick or A and D keys to dodge pedestrians. Occasionally, the camera will shift to show TONORI, now muscular, knocking people against buildings, walls, and containers (damaging the containers). At the end of the street, KUD must choose to turn left or right.

STEIN
KUD! Turn left, I see you!

If KUD turns left, he’ll see a small stretch of sidewalk where STEIN is standing in front of a store surrounded by people.

STEIN (CONT’D)
        THIS WAY, KUD!

Both enter the store, but as the door closes, a loud crash is heard—TONORI has entered.

KUD
        There’s a backdoor. Let’s go!

A new QuickTime Event begins, where players must knock over food shelves and other store items.

After exiting the store through the backdoor, the pair separates once again. When KUD is alone, the camera shifts, showing TONORI coughing up blood.

KUD (CONT’D)
So, that’s your weakness? Then we just need to go a little further.

Now, the player controls STEIN, who is running down a street full of bars. He calls KUD on the phone.

STEIN
Where are you, KUD? I’m near the Okubo park.
KUD
Go into the park. I’ve got a plan. I’ll head to the smoking area. Meet me there with something to hit this guy. Directly in the chest.
STEIN
Wouldn’t it be better to hit him in the head?
KUD
Just trust me! I’ll be there in 30 seconds.

A 30-second timer appears, and players need to find something to use against TONORI. Objects like a construction cone, a trash can lid, or a wooden beam are scattered around. Once the player reaches the designated area, they must hit TONORI in the chest.

STEIN
There you are, screw you asshole. Good plan buddy.
KUD
Yes, you hit him pretty hard.

TONORI, breathless, will be on the floor recovering little by little and it looks like he is getting up.

STEIN
        (nervous)
        Are you fucking kidding me?
KUD
No, don't worry. I know what his injury is.

TONORI lays down on the floor and starts pucking and sputting blood.

KUD (CONT’D)
His lumbs are now really smaller. Because of smoking, I believe. He didn't get notice but he broke them during this sprints. Let's get out of here, people are watching.
STEIN
        Yeah.

KUD and STEIN walks off while some people are watching the TONORI’s body.

Context

This script was made as one of the practices of the Narrative Course for Video Games at Gametopia. The intention was to create an introduction for an open world game, similar to Granf Theft Auto, set in Tokyo with elements typical of fictional works of the time. In this case, superpowers similar to Boku no Hero, where acquiring each has a detrimental consequence. The story explores deeper themes than those of Japanese manga, such as drug trafficking, yakuza or the consequences of one’s actions.
