Monster Survivor

Monster Survivor is a game that combines wave survival with PvP combat between four players. The goal is to score the most points without being defeated by your rivals or the enemies in the arena.

Game Flow
  • Designing skillset for two of the characters.
  • Creating a system for passive abilities and skill trees.
  • Balancing various stats for both enemies and characters.
  • Conceptualizing a system of 3 classes for character design.

I was responsible for designing two of the nine available characters (Wolfang and Frankie, you can see them in the image). To do this, I first created a guide outlining the types of characters we had and established a series of advantages and drawbacks among them to balance what would become a competitive game. I studied characters from similar games, such as Wild Rift and Genshin Impact, to identify shortcomings in our design. Based on this analysis, I developed a set of criteria that all characters needed to meet to be playable. This guideline was used throughout the development process. The main idea was to implement a tank-bruiser-ranged system, creating a triangle of balance. I modified some of the existing character abilities to fit this model and designed a pure tank and a bruiser to establish a standard from which we could deviate in the future.

Gameplay Feature

During playtesting sessions, I noticed that the game lacked certain mechanical depth and, more importantly, did not evolve. There were no changes in gameplay beyond unlocking new characters, which meant that users could become bored over time. To address this, a colleague and I designed a passive skills tree to enhance progression and balance the matchmaking system in competitive play. After playing a series of matches, players would earn skill points based on their performance, which could be spent in this skill tree. This way, players were not ranked by a specific level or pure skill alone, but by the power of their characters' passive abilities.
